Penang Announces RM15 Million Free Bus Service

Penang state government yesterday announced that the free bus service during peak hours as promised in “2018 Penang Budget” will start on 1 April 2018.

The project is called Congestion Alleviation Transport (CAT), which costs RM15 million, will be fully borne by the state government.

Several routes had been identified, namely George Town 2, Tanjong Tokong, Sungai Dua, Bayan Baru, Ayer Itam, and Balik Pulau (on the island); and Bertam, Bukit Mertajam, Simpang Ampat, Nibong Tebal, Seberang Jaya, and Batu Kawan.

To date, 12 routes have been identified as having the potential to be CAT routes and there will be about 46 buses operating in these routes.

CAT service is being introduced to encourage the use of public transport and reduce dependency on private vehicles.

This will, in turn, help reduce traffic congestion especially during peak hours.
